Who we are

The World Future Council consists of 50 eminent global change-makers from governments, parliaments, civil society, academia, the arts and business. We work to pass on a healthy planet and just societies to our children and grandchildren with a focus on identifying and spreading effective, future-just policy solutions. The World Future Council was launched in 2007 by Jakob von Uexkull, Founder of the 'Alternative Nobel Prize'. It operates as an independent foundation under German law and finances its activities from donations.

Our Vision of the World

We envision a sustainable, just and peaceful future where universal rights are respected.

Our Mission

The WFC aims to be an ethical voice for the needs of future life and to pass on a healthy planet and just societies to our children and grandchildren.

Our Commitment to Future Generations

We promise to do everything in our power to help sustain life on the Earth with all its beauty and diversity for future generations and to work for comprehensive peace between people and countries.

Our Values

We are bound together by our common values of responsibility, compassion, respect, trust and care for the environment. The global challenges facing humanity require coherent global answers. Decisions that we make today will have repercussions for many generations to come.

Our Work

We make politicians aware that they have an ethical responsibility to assess every decision-making process on the basis of how it will affect future generations. In close collaboration with civil society groups, members of parliament, governments, businesses and international organisations we research future just policies and legislation. We then advise political decision-makers, offer them tried and tested courses of action and support them in the concrete implementation of new policies. As an independent non-profit organisation with no interest in short-term profit or prestige, autonomous from governmental and institutional interests, our organisation enjoys the highest level of credibility in its political advocacy. To identify holistic solutions on a wide range of issues and to enable the application of these solutions, the WFC has created the following programmes:

Where we work

The World Future Council Foundation is a registered charitable foundation in Hamburg, Germany where the head office is located. Additionally, we have staff working in Geneva and London. Our Councillors work on all five continents.

How we work

In close collaboration with civil society groups, members of parliament, governments, international organisations and academia we research and implement future just policies and legislation.
Our work is based on recognised scientific criteria. We base our methodology on the β€œ2002 New Delhi Declaration – Principles of International Law” for sustainable development as well as the Millennium Development Goals and the Earth Charter.

WFC Councillors and advisors from all continents ensure that our work operates from an integrated approach and that WFC initiatives are effectively multiplied and spread. For a full list of Councillors click here .

What makes us unique

Each and every one of our Councillors has already successfully promoted change – and they come from a vast variety of countries and backgrounds. This guarantees that the WFC can tackle problems in a holistic and inclusive manner. The aim of the WFC is to advise policy-makers to create frameworks that enable a fair and ecologically intact world for current and future generations. We support and advise political decision-makers with the goal of ensuring that their decisions are always made in accordance with sustainability and intergenerational fairness.

What we want to achieve

The lifestyle in industrialised countries has led to people using up natural resources at a threatening pace. Consequently, our environment is being destroyed and the unequal distribution of wealth and natural resources is increasing. Humanity today is living and consuming at the price of future generations. The World Future Council works to safeguard the rights of future generations. Our aim is to pass on a healthy planet and just societies to our children and grandchildren.

How we finance our international work

The World Future Council is a charitable foundation and relies on private and institutional donations to fund its work. Initial funding by the City of Hamburg and entrepreneur Dr. Michael Otto for the period from 2007 to 2009 enabled the World Future Council to blossom and grow. Since then the WFC has relied completely on private and institutional donations and grants to finance its work for the good of future generations. Donations, however small, are always most welcome! We are committed to using donations conscientiously and efficiently.
